Security beefed up folllowing intelligence tip off
Shillong, Jan 25 (PTI) Intelligence inputs suggestingintrusion of militants into the state from Bangladesh haveprompted the Meghalaya Police to beef up security in the runup to the Republic Day.
A senior police official confirmed receipt ofinformation that some seven to eight armed cadre of theproscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) haveentered into Meghalaya from Bangladesh with a view to carryout subversive activities.
The banned HNLC has already called for a 24-hourbandh from 6 pm today to protest the Republic Daycelebrations.
"The cadre are split into two groups. We are takingall measures to ensure that they do not succeed in theirmission," the official said.
Night patrolling and surveillance had beenintensified to ensure fullproof security, especially in thefourth Khasi-Jaintia districts.
Police check points have been put up at sensitiveplaces.
State capital Shillong has been virtually sealed,with security men increasing vigil and setting up friskingpoints at all the entry points.
The central Republic Day celebrations will be heldat the Polo Grounds here, where Governor RS Mooshahary willunfurl the Tricolor.
