Resident doctors go on flash strike at Sion Hospital

Mumbai, Jan 24 (PTI)Around 540 Resident doctors went ona flash strike at the Civic-run Lokmanya Tilak hospital atSion today after a lady doctor was verbally abused byrelatives of a patient last night for not admitting him.

Demanding more protection, the resident doctors saidthat the authorities should make sure that no such incidenttake place in future.

The Vice-dean of the hospital Dr Nirmala Barse said thatdoctors have gone back to duty and everything is fine.

According to the Resident Doctors, the patient who cameto the hospital last night was having a mild pain in theabdomen and so they refused to admit him.

The agitating resident doctors have submitted amemorandum to the Dean of the hospital Dr Sandiya Kamat totake action against the guilty within 24 hours.

"If the action is not taken in 24 hours, we will haveto take some drastic steps," the Resident Doctors said.

In October 2008, Maharashtra government enacted stricterlaws making an assault on doctors on duty a non-bailableoffence with offender facing upto three years in jail.
