Currency notes totalling Rs 4 cr found burnt in Karnataka

Bellary, Jan 24 (PTI) Mystery shrouds the burning ofcurrency notes totalling about Rs four crore stashed in threegunny bags at a village near here.

Some unidentified men came with the gunny bags, set themafire and fled the place yesterday in Alipura village, fourkm from here, police said today.

Half-burnt currency notes in the denomination of 100 and500, totalling about Rs four crore, were found scatteredaround the area, police, who were informed by the locals aboutthe incident, said.

Locals also told the police that some persons dumped atleast three more gunny bags into a canal. Police said a searchwas on for the bags and the incident was being investigated.

Bank officials who examined the half-burnt currency notessaid the notes were genuine.
