Pulse polio: Boy's death reported from Chennai

Chennai, Jan 23: A two-year-old boy reportedly died after he was given oral polio drops in Padappai of Chennai suburbs early on Sunday, Jan 23.

The child, identified as Jashua, was administered oral polio drops at around 8.30 am at an anganwadi in Padappai of Chennai outskirts. His mother Dhanalakshmi fed him milk soon after taking him to home from the polio drops centre, a Times of India report said.

But the child got sick and was immediately taken to a private hospital where they advised the mother to take him to a government hospital. But the child died on the way to Chromepet General Hospital, according to the mother. Cause of the child's death is yet to be ascertained after post-morterm.

Hearing about the child's death neighbours, who had also got administered polio drops to their children, panicked and took them for check-up. However, the Director of Public Health Dr RT Porkai Pandian ruled out the possibility of the polio drops causing the child's death. He said that none of the other children, who were given the drops from the same vial, got any problem.

As part of national pulse polio drive, polio drops was administered throughout the country on Sunday, Jan 23.
