Schiavone prevails in record marathon

By Biswajeet Panda
Melbourne, Jan 23: Some matches go down in history for the sheer competition involved. And the fourth round match of Australian Open 2011 Women's single between Francesca Schiavone and Svetlana Kuznetsova will surely go down as one of the best ever.

The duo slugged it our for an incredible four hours and 44 minutes to go past the match between Barbora Zahlova and Regina Kulikova as the longest match in Women's single. In this match of grit and stamina, Schavelona beat Kuznetsova 6-4, 1-6, 16-14.

In the third set, both the players fought desperately but Schiavone saved six match points as opposed to Kuznetsova's two and captured the decisive break at 14-14.

Kuznetsova could not save the third match point as Schiavone sealed the three-hour long third set with a forehand volley.

Italy's Schiavone will now take on top seed Caroline Wozniacki in the quarter-finals.
