Karachi, Jan 19 (PTI) The Pakistan Cricket Board hasissued a notice to the national team coach Waqar Younis afterthe former pacer expressed surprise over PCB''s decision towithhold the name of the captain for the World Cup startingnext month.

PCB media manager Nadeem Sarwar told PTI that the boardhad taken notice of Waqar''s statement in New Zealand regardingthe captaincy issue.

"We have issued him (Waqar) a notice asking him toexplain his comments on the captaincy issue since he is undercontract with the PCB," Sarwar said.

He said under PCB''s media policy it was binding on allteam officials and players to avoid giving statements thatquestion or negate the policies of the board.

"We have asked him to give an explanation on hisstatement that he was surprised by the decision not toannounce the captain for the World Cup," Sarwar said.

Waqar told Geo Super channel from Wellington yesterdaythat the PCB should have named the captain for the mega-eventcaptain while announcing the team.

"This is also surprising to me. I don''t know what reasonsthe board could have for delaying the announcement of thecaptain. But personally I feel it would have been better toannounce the captain with the World Cup team," Waqar had said.

The PCB yesterday announced its World Cup squad but heldback the name of the captain, adding to speculations thatthere is a tough fight between Misbah-ul-Haq and Shahid Afridifor the job.

The decision to not announce the captain has beencriticised by many former captains and ex-selectors, who feelby delaying the decision so close to the World Cup the boardwill only create problems in the team.

In recent times, the PCB has adopted a new media policyfor the players and officials and come down hard on anyviolations of this policy that include limiting directinteraction with the journalists and depending more on pressreleases.

Waqar, a former captain, guided the national team to itsfirst Test series win since 2006 when Pakistan won thedefeated New Zealand 1-0 in the two-match series yesterday.
