NCW seeks report from Indian HC in London on Verma
New Delhi, Jan 18 (PTI) Taking suo motu cognisance ofmedia reports, the National Commission of Women today sought adetailed report from the Indian Embassy in the UK aboutallegations that senior diplomat Anil Verma, posted at themission, had assaulted his wife.
The NCW sent a letter to the Indian Embassy in London andasked it to file a detailed report on the allegations withinone month, an official said.
The government has already transferred the seniorofficial back to New Delhi and said the matter will be"thoroughly investigated" and action taken accordingly.
Verma, a senior IAS officer of West Bengal cadre, isalleged to have attacked his wife after a heated argument onDecember 11, 2010.
Verma, Minister (Economic) in the High Commission hasbeen questioned by the Scotland Yard on allegations that heassaulted his wife but escaped prosecution due to diplomaticimmunity.
Britain had yesterday asked India to waive the diplomaticimmunity for Verma but the government refused.
Under the 1961 Vienna Convention, foreign officials,their spouses, children and staff are protected fromprosecution in their host country.
