Bengal men and women teams enters semi-final

Kolkata, Jan 18 (PTI) Host West Bengal had a memorableouting with their men''s and women''s team storming into thesemifinals in an otherwise smooth sailing for the fanciedteams in Keventer 72nd Senior National and Inter-State TableTennis Championship at Netaji Indoor Stadium today.

The men''s team stunned Railway Sports Promotion Board 3-1in the last match of the day to set up a semifinal clash withMaharashtra A who ousted Harayana 3-0 while in the women''ssection, the hosts thrashed Andhra Pradesh 3-0 as they alsolined up for a semifinal date with Maharashtra A.

Reigning champions PSPB continued their march with a 3-0rout over Gujarat as they will face Tamil Nadu in the secondmen''s team semis tomorrow.

West Bengal team rode on a superb performance by SouravSaha to oust the railmen.

Sourav Saha beat Sayan Paul Roy 11-7 10-12 11-9 11-7 inthe first match while they conceded the lead after Arnab Nandilost to Harmeet Desai 5-11 10-12 9-11.

But West Bengal made a comeback with Souvik Kar batingSouvik Basu Roy 11-7 8-11 11-9 11-9 while Sourav settled theissue with a 11-8 6-11 8-11 12-10 11-7 win over Desai.

West Bengal eves had to sweat past Andhra Pradesh 3-2to enter last four.

Having lost the first match after Pallavi Kundu wasbeaten 11-5 11-5 9-11 7-11 6-11 by Nikhit Banu of Andhra,Bengal scripted a comeback with veteran skipper AninditaChakraborty playing her 21st national.

Anindita beat K Spoorty 11-6 11-6 11-9 while theysnatched the lead when Krittika Sinha Roy thrashed AkshiSancheti 11-6 11-6 11-8.

But in a turnaround of sorts, Jharkhand equalised 2-2when Nikhit stunned Anindita 11-8 11-7 11-7 but Pallaviclinched the issue beating Spoorthy 11-4 12-10 11-8 for aplace in the semis.

Maharashtra A ended Jharkhand''s dream run with an easy3-0 win to make the last four round.

Shruti Talnikar faced some resistance from Tulika Roybefore winning 4-11 8-11 13-11 11-6 11-6 to give Maharashtra Aa winning start.

Thereafter, Mamta Prabhu and Vedika Garg completed theformalities winning their respective rubbers.

Mamta beat Rupsha Bhattacharya 11-7 11-6 11-4 whileVedika got the better of Tania Mandal 11-8 12-10 11-4. MOREPTI TAP AMD SHN
