Madurai, Jan 17 (PTI): The Commissioner of VirudhunagarMunicipality and an Engineer have been suspended, pending anenquiry for not resolving problems relating to UndergroundDrainage scheme, leading to inordinate delay in implementationof the scheme.
The UDS, which began in 2006, should have been completed by2008.The town was divided into two divisions to implement thework.
While work in Eastern division was completed as per theagreement, that in the western division was not finished forvarious reasons. Some Municipal councillors had allegedlyprovided UDS connections to residents without getting approvaland money from property owners, reportedly leading to revenueloss to the tune of several lakhs of Rupees, officials said.
Meanwhile some irregularities were also found inimplementation of the scheme,and the two officials werecriticised for the same.
The Commissioner for Municipal administration suspended thetwo officials pending enquiry about the irregularities.
Initial enquiry revealed that some UDS connections wereillegal and over and above the capacity of the city''s UDS,officials said.
