New Delhi, Jan 18 (PTI) Government today hit back at BJPon the appointment of P J Thomas as Central VigilanceCommissioner (CVC) saying the party did nothing when it was inpower on sanctioning prosecution against him as they couldfind nothing against him.

Government sources said the first request for grant ofsanction for prosecution of Thomas in a corruption case inKerala came to the Central government on December 31, 1999 andit was valid till the last day of the NDA government on May21, 2004.

"But the NDA government did not act on it and thisindicated that the government did not consider it fit forgranting sanction," the sources said.

The Central vigilance commission on two ocassions -- June25, 2007 and October 6, 2008 - gave clearance for theappointment of Thomas as a Secretary in the Government ofIndia, probably finding nothing against him.

Besides the Left Front government in Kerala hadappointed Thomas as the Chief Secretary of the state afterfinding nothing against him, the sources said.

Government sources said the BJP has no right to commenton the issue as it is a sub judice matter and should allow theSupreme Court to take a view after hearing from both sides.
