Mumbai Marathon is an unauthorised event: Sumariwalla

By Pti

Mumbai, Jan 16 (PTI) After running the show in the firstseven years with the event''s promoters Procam International, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) kept away from today''s8th edition of the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon bydeclaring it as "unauthorised".

"It''s an unauthorised event and we had informed allconcerned of this matter. We will decide at our AGM to be heldsoon what to do with those who took part in it," AFI''s workingpresident Adille Sumariwalla told PTI today.

The USD 325,000 race saw a clean sweep by Ethiopians inthe women''s section and a 1-2 sweep in the men''s with KorenYal and her compatriot Girma Assefa winning the respectivetitles by dipping under the existing course records.

Former national sprint champion and Olympian Sumariwalla, however, denied that the issue of declaring the eventunauthorised this year was taken because of a spat withorganisers Procam Internattional over enhanced capitation feethat the AFI had demanded.

"It is not true. Of course they were paying capitationfees to us for running the marathon in Mumbai, half marathonin Delhi and 10k road race event in Bangalore. They did notask for our permission, like they had done in previous years,to run the event this year and that''s why we declared it asunauthorised," said Sumariwalla.

Sumariwalla''s view contradicted that of the organisers, who have said that the spat between them and AFI was over theincreased capitation fee payment that was demanded by thefederation. (More) PTI SSR VKV SHN
