Ahmedabad, Jan 16 (PTI) With Gujarat becoming a globalbusiness hub, golf was fast emerging as a tourism destinationin the state, Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi said heretoday on the sidelines of Gujarat Kensville Golf Challenge2011, which is part of the European Challenge Tour.
"The Gujarat Kensville Golf Challenge has put the stateon the international Golf circuit which is a matter of greatpride. Ahmedabad is the third city after Delhi and Kolkata tohost an international golf tournament," Modi said during theclosing ceremony of the tournament here.
He said that to promote golf-based tourism in the state,government has signed five memorandum of understandings (MoUs)with as many private players during the recently concludedVibrant Gujarat Summit, 2011.
"Though golf is a new game for Gujarat, but is gainingpopularity among the youth of the state and could be developedfor tourism purpose. I believe that soon there would be over1,000 golf players from Gujarat," Modi said.
He said that sports may not be in DNA of Gujaratis, butto create an holistic atmosphere of sports, the government hasdecided to set up a sports university in the state.
Modi also gave away prizes to the participants of thetournament where 144 players from 68 different countriesincluding India had participated.
