Over 19,000 tested positive for HIV in MP in past six years

Indore, Jan 16 (PTI) Over 19,000 people have testedpositive for the deadly Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) inMadhya Pradesh in the last six years, sources said today.

"Samples of 8,90,984 suspected persons were tested forHIV in the state between 2005 and 2010 and out of them 19,362had AIDS," an official of the Madhya Pradesh State AIDSControl Society (MPSACS) said today.

"A total of 12,011 (around 65 per cent) men and 7,351women were tested positive for HIV," he said adding that ineach 100 men samples, five were found HIV positive.

In each 100 women samples, two were found suffering fromthe disease, the official added.

During the last six years, a total of 2,61,750 male and6,29,234 fair sex samples were tested for AIDS, he said.

Indore was found to be one of the most vulnerable placeswith regard to AIDS in the country, they said.

According to the MPSACS figures, 1,1759 AIDS cases werereported in 2005, 2,119 in 2006, 3,270 in 2007, 3,407 in 2008,4,449 in 2009 and 4,358 in 2010.

The first case of AIDS was detected in Madhya Pradesh in1988.

Meanwhile, the experts said that unsafe sex is the mainreason behind the spread of AIDS in men in the state. PTI HWPLALVKV
