CBI to register fresh FIRs against OC members, officials

New Delhi, Jan 16 (PTI) After registering four casesin scams related to Commonwealth Games, the CBI is all set toregister fresh FIRs against some Organising Committee membersand officials in connection with alleged misappropriation offunds in renovation of stadiums even as it plans to summon itsChairman Suresh Kalmadi again for questioning soon.

Highly-placed sources in the CBI said that there wereallegations about financial irregularities in connection withworks related to some stadiums and a case could be registeredagainst certain officials of OC and Central Public WorksDepartment.

The sources said that while minor complaints ofmisappropriation of funds would be handed over to the centralvigilance officers of the concerned department, the CBI wouldtake only cases where alleged bunglings ran into severalcrores.

In a related development, the CBI would be questioningKalmadi again. He was earlier questioned on January five.

A senior official of the agency, which was examiningcomplaints forwarded by the Central Vigilance Commission, saidin some of the cases decisions were taken at the last momentonly apparently to help some contractors to charge more.

According to documents of the CPWD, the cost ofconstruction of five Commonwealth Games venues by the centralworks department had escalated by over Rs 1,110 crore.

The CPWD had renovated Jawaharlal Nehru StadiumComplex, Indira Gandhi Stadium Complex, Dr Shyama PrasadMukherjee Swimming Pool Complex, Major Dhyanchand NationalStadium and Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range for the CWG heldhere between October 3 and 14, 2010.

"A consolidated sum of Rs 1,000 crore (plus or minus10 per cent) was sanctioned for these stadiums initially. Nostadium-wise cost was approved. Later, revised sanction for Rs2,460 crore was accorded by the Cabinet," the CPWD documentssaid.

The PWD spent Rs 396.06 crore in construction ofThyagraj Sports Complex, Chhatrasal Stadium and Ludlow CastleWrestling Training Venues.

The issue had led to political rumblings with CPI(M)politburo member Sitaram Yechury, who headed the ParliamentaryStanding Committee which submitted a report on thepreparedness for the Commonwealth Games in 2009, expressingconcern over the escalated costs.

He had said that for the Indira Gandhi stadium, theamount stood at Rs 669 crore, for the shooting range at Rs 149crore and a whopping Rs 961 crore for Jawaharlal NehruStadium.

The CBI has till now registered four FIRs naming someof the close aides of OC chairman Suresh Kalmadi, includingSanjay Mahendroo, for alleged criminal conspiracy andfinancial irregularities in executing certain contracts. PTISKL SC
