Railway DMU plant not to come up at Sankrail: Mamata

Singur (WB), Jan 13 (PTI) Railway minister MamataBanerjee today said that the proposed DMU plant in Howrahdistrict would not be set up following CPI-M''s "opposition"and an alternate site would be named within a day or two.

"We wanted to set up the DMU factory at Sankrail. Butit will not come up there. I will announce tomorrow or dayafter where the unit will be set up. But it will come up inBengal," Banerjee told a railway programme here.

She said that the land at Sankrail would remain withthe Railways.

Banerjee said that the CPI-M had earlier asked why thefactory had not been set up, and then the party opposed itwhen it was decided to set up the Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU)plant.

Earlier, addressing a public rally here Banerjee saidthat the DMU factory could be set up in Singur.

"If they (the Left Front government) gives the land inSingur, we can set up the DMU factory here. It will take notime," she said.

"Singur is the birthplace of our movement. There willbe industry here besides agriculture. Our first task (ofsetting up industry) will begin from Singur."

Falling back on her stand that 400 acre of the landacquired for Tata Motors should be returned to farmers who hadunwillingly parted with their land and the remaining 600 acrebe used for industry, she said "I have stated earlier thatindustry be set up on 600 acre in Singur and 400 acre returnedto unwilling farmers.

"I am saying the same thing today. I have one face, Idon''t wear a mask. If you want you can set up factory in 600acre," Banerjee said. (More) PTI SUN PC
