Fisherman attacked; Karuna wants strong action

Chennai, Jan 13: The Tamil Nadu government on Jan 13 said that it has taken up with the Centre the issue of killing of a fisherman from the state by the Sri Lankan Navy and demanded strong action.

Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin informed the state assembly that Chief Minister M Karunandihi has sent a telegram to the Centre in this regard and demanded strong action.

"We have been taking up the issue time and again with the Centre, which in turn had been taking it up with the Sri Lankan government. The chief minister has sent a telegram to the Centre demanding strong action", he said while replying to points raised by opposition MLAs, including AIADMK and Congress, who sought to raise the issue through a special mention during zero hour.

Stalin said that the kin of the victim Pandian has been given a compensation of Rs five lakh.

Earlier, D Jayakumar of AIADMK slammed the ruling DMK over the "continued killing" of Tamil Nadu fishermen by Sri Lankan Navy in the past four years and asked "whether the state government will just stop with writing letters to the Centre or would take any action."
