Kashi varsity rally to down Punjab

Mumbai, Jan 11 (PTI) Trailing by a first half goal, M GKashi University, Varanasi rallied in fine fashion to overcomePunjab University, Chandigarh 2-1 in a main draw league matchof the INK-Infrastructure Inter-Zonal Inter-University men''shockey tournament today.

Jagmeet Singh''s field effort put the Punjab side in frontin the 18th minute and they did well to keep their citadelintact till the end of the first half.

However, after the change of ends the Varanasi ladslifted their game several notches and restored parity withinfive minutes on resumption when Abhishek S converted a penaltycorner.

The Varanasi team got the match-winner through Mohd Javedin the 54th minute.

In another tie, Madras University trounced Benares HinduUniversity 5-1 with all the goals coming from penalty corners.

Full back Arauidhan scored a brace of short corner goalsin the 2nd and 17th minutes before S Nantha Kumar emulated himwith indirect penalty corner strikes in the 45th and 52ndminutes to put the Chennai lads 4-0 in front.

Captain R Ashok Kumar completed the tally in the 57thminute while Amit Kumar Upadyay got the consolation goal forthe losers.

In another league clash, VBSPU (UP) proved too strong forBharatidassan University, Tiruchirappalli as they romped to a8-0 victory. Imran Khan and Amarnath Ram netted three goalseach while Harikripal Singh and Ramvijay Yadav chipped in withone each.
