Islamabad, Jan 6: Pakistani officials cited a larger conspiracy behind governor Salman Taseer's murder by his own escort on Jan 4. Soon after the brutal assassination, investigators detained over 40 people including 36 policemen in the murder case.

Pakistani officials confirmed about their investigation to ascertain whether the escort had acted on his own or at the behest of "some organisation."

The investigators already arrested Sardar Ebaad Dogar who offered a cash prize of Rs 20 million to anyone who killed Salmaan Taseer.

Pakistan paid homage to the 66-year-old Taseer on Wednesday, Jan 5. Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani with other political leaders were present there to pay the homage, however, President Asif Ali Zardari did not attend the funeral.

Taseer has irked hardliners with his stand on the controversial blasphemy laws. He was gunned down by his guard for his vocal criticism on the law. He pumped 26 bullets on Taseer killing him instantly.
