K'taka panchayat elections- BSY's acid-test
The elections for the local bodies are a do-or-die situation for South India's first BJP government and will be an acid-test for the scam-hit Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa. The opposition parties Congress and JDS have tried to cash in this issue as much as possible in this elections. These parties have been urging for CM Yeddyurappa's resignation over his alleged involvement in the land scam for the last 2 months.
Former Prime Minister HD Devegowda had released a public charge-sheet against CM Yeddyurappa over corruption and nepotism charges. The charge-sheet containing the charges would be circulated among Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, besides BJP Patriarch LK Advani and other NDA leaders.
Corruption in the BJP Government in Karnataka is overwhelming and considered to be in the tune of Rs One lakh crore. Devegowda had also launched a scathing attack and organised a campaign called "2G Spectrum versus Karnataka." He asserted that "we cannot shut our eyes to developments in the state" The fact remains that there are enough documentary evidences to prove the corruption charges against the BS Yeddyurappa Government, claimed Devegowda.
Considering ZP/ TP polls, the BJP high command had given Yeddyurappa a second chance foreseeing the impending panchayat elections that will seal the fate of the tainted BJP governance. It is widely speculated that pressure will mount up on him to step down from his chief-ministership if the BJP loses the polls in the local body elections.
