Mumbai policeman set on fire by auto driver dies
Constable Anil Aitiwadekar was set on fire by an auto-rickshaw driver, identified as Mahendra Kevat last week in Vasai.
The horrific incident took place in full public view when Aitiwadekar stopped Kevat and asked him for his papers. Since the auto-rickshaw driver did not have his papers, the constable had fined him. Enraged by this, Kevat returned with two bottles of kerosene, poured it on the constable and set him on fire.
Aitiwadekar, who sustained 50 per cent burns, was rushed to the hospital. Kevat was arrested after the incident and remanded to six days police custody.
With the constable now succumbing to his burns, the attempt to murder charge slapped against the accused is likely to be changed to murder.
