New Delhi, Oct 27: For the sake of pursuing a strong political career, 83-year-old Vidya Stokes on Oct 27 resigned from the Hockey India as its President.

"I have to travel a lot because of my political career and I cannot find the time. That is why I have decided to step down," stated Stokes while speaking about her decision.

However, the statement of Hockey India deferred from her as the association claimed, "Stokes had said that she would step down as President only after the Commonwealth Games as India was the host for these prestigious Games."

Defying the government's age limit guidelines to be elected President of Hockey India, Stokes won an acrimonious election earlier in Aug 2010 after beating former Olympian, Pargat Singh by a 41-21 margin.
