CWG: Somdev grabs India's lone tennis gold

By Samyuktha

New Delhi, Oct 11: After the disappointments served to India by Sania Miza and, Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes, men's singles top seed Somdev Devvarman cheered the host country by bagging the lone tennis gold at the Delhi Commonwealth Games.

Somdev clinched a thumping 6-4, 6-2 win over his Australian opponent Greg Jones with confidence and skill that was bolstered by the cheering home crowd at New Delhi on Sunday, Oct 10.

“My emotions are unexplanable. The crowd support has been fantastic throughout and it is because of them that I won today", the world number 97 is quoted as saying after the match.

The one hour and 27 minutes bout saw both the players hold their serve initially. While Jones came back from three breakpoints down to win the fifth game, Somdev turned the match around with his break of his opponent"s serve in the seventh game.

“My main focus in every game is to try and make my opponent look like crap. I think I did that today," the victor said.

Somdev's female counterpart Sania Mirza lost her finals bout on Saturday, Oct 9 while men's doubles pair Bhupathi and Paes settled for bronze in the debut tennis tournament of the Commonwealth Games.
