Will the women make it to CWG medal stage?

By Samyuktha

New Delhi, Oct 8: Despite the Indian women's hockey team's thumping 7-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago, the future of the team's campaign does not look so bright at the Delhi Commonwealth Games.

The team on Friday, Oct 8 fell short of the 14 goal target required to get past the league stage of the hockey tournament.

India will clash against South Africa on Saturday, Oct 9 and a lot will rest on this last league match.

“At the start of the game today, we had a certain target and that was 14 goals, but we only managed seven and this could hurt us," said team coach Sandeep Somesh, who was praying on the possibility of a tie with South Africa on points.

Now, not only do the women have to win the match, but they should also win by a huge margin to qualify for the medal round.

"We had beaten South Africa in the World Cup, but we needed to score more goals today, but didn"t. We had plenty of chances, but our finishing was not up to the mark," said captain Surinder Kaur, who scored four goals against Trinidad and Tobago.
