New Delhi, Oct 7: Top seed Indian Somdev Devvarman took another step closer to the coveted Gold at the Delhi Commonwealth Games' debut tennis tournament as he claimed a 6-3 6-4 victory over Rubin Statham of New Zealand to march into the semi-finals.
Somdev's encounter with the sixth seed New Zealand player was no cake walk for the Indian. Unlike his previous easy win over unseeded Sri Lankan Amresh Jayawickreme, World No 97 had to tackle a big fight for an hour and 42 minutes on Thursday, Oct 7.
The home crowd was in for quiet a few shocks when Somdev missed out on three match points in the seventh game and he later dropped his serve in the eighth.
However, the Indian wrapped up the match in the 10th game.
