NE to be included in India's rail map by 2016
Railway Minister, Mamata Banerjee mentioned in her 2010 railway budget that North East region would get rail connection by 2016.
During the 59th meeting of the North Eastern Council (NEC) on Sep 28, officials of the Railway Ministry submitted the revised plan and also presented the Action Plan for implementation of the North East Vision 2020 document.
Currently only Assam and a part of Nagaland and area bordering Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura boast of rail connection.
According the railway ministry sources, all state capitals in the region would be connected by the railways by 2016 at an estimated expenditure of Rs 17,000 crore.
As per the revised estimate, Shillong, capital of Meghalaya, is scheduled to come on the railway map of the country by 2014.
