CWG: Army to reconstruct collapsed stadium bridge?

New Delhi, Sep 25: As the Commonwealth Games mess continues to mount, Army may be called in for rescue. According to media reports, the Indian Army may be brought in to re-construct the foot overbridge that collapsed at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium earlier this week.

The Army is likely to re-construct the 95-metre long hanging over-bridge, which collapsed on Tuesday, Sep 21, reported DNA.

The collapse of the under-construction bridge connecting the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium to a parking lot has added to the embarrassments that India has been face over the lack of preparedness for the Oct 3 to Oct 14 international sporting event.

Another leading daily, Times of India reported that the Delhi government decided to call the Army after it was found that an alternative movement plan fir spectators would pose a security threat.

Quoting government officials, the newspaper reported that the Army is expected to begin work immediately and is expected to deliver the bridge within five days.

"This will be a Bailey bridge,: chief secretary Rakesh Mehta told TOI.

A Bailey bridge is a prefabricated truss bridge used by the military to bridge gaps, the report noted.
