Nevada (US), Sept 21 (ANI): Religious statesman Rajan Zed opened the "International Day of Peace" celebrations in Reno (Nevada, USA) with "Gayatri mantra", the most sacred mantra in Hinduism, on September 19.

Rajan Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, also read the Proclamation for the International Day of Peace, a unity prayer from oldest existing scripture Rig-Veda, and concluded with "Om Shanti Shanti Shanti" (Peace, Peace, Peace be unto all). He sprinkled Gangajal (sacred water from river Ganga in India) at the stage before the prayers.

It offered exploration of ways of creating a culture of peace, Paula McDonough and Lisa Stiller, co-chairs of the Fair stated.

The International Day of Peace, established by UN General Assembly and observed each year on September 21, is an annual day of non-violence and cease-fire. "The UN invites all nations and people to honour a cessation of hostilities during the Day, and to otherwise commemorate the Day through education and public awareness on issues related to peace".
