Wrestler Sushil Kumar returns home

New Delhi, Sep 14 (ANI): Sushil Kumar, winner of the gold medal in world wrestling championship received a hero's welcome as he returned to Delhi Monday night.

Hundreds of fans and supporters thronged Indira Gandhi International Airport as Sushil Kumar arrived in India.

Talking to reporters here, Kumar said that he is thankful to people of India for supporting him.

"I was quite confident that I will win a medal at the World Championship. I worked hard under the guidance of my coach Satpal and other wrestlers for the last one year and I am happy that I have done it," he added.

"I will try hard to win in the upcoming Commonwealth Games and win gold medal for the country," he said.

Kumar's mother also expressed her joy and said that no player has done this before for the country.

"He has created history by winning this gold medal. Nobody has done this before in the India, today Sushil has done the country proud by winning the gold medal," said Kamala Devi.

Twenty-seven-year-old Kumar made history by becoming the first Indian to win a world wrestling championship gold medal when he overpowered home favourite Alan Gogaev to win the 66kg freestyle title in Moscow on Sunday.

The exciting 3-1 victory in the title-bout also made Sushil the first Indian grappler to bag Olympic and World championship medals.

He already has under his belt the Asian and Commonwealth titles. (ANI)
