Rlys announces Rs 10 lakh award for Sushil Kumar

By Samyuktha
New Delhi, Sep 14: As Sushil Kumar landed in Delhi to a hero's welcome on Monday, Sep 13 night, Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee announced an award of Rs 10 lakh to the wrestler, who is the Assistant Commercial Manager with the Northern Railways, for winning gold medal in World Wrestling Championship in Moscow.

Congratulating him and praising his dedication, Mamata Banerjee said, "His victory is a victory for the 'Rail Parivar' and dedicated to the nation."

Sushil overcame Russian Alan Gogaev to win the 66 kg freestyle title on Sunday, Sep 12.

Besides becoming the first Indian to win a gold medal at the World Wrestling Championship, Susil also became the third Railwayman to have brought laurels after Railway sportspersons Bishambar Singh and Ramesh Kumar had won a silver and a bronze in the World Wrestling Championships in 1967 and 2009 respectively.

The grappler, who arrived at the Delhi airport late Monday, Sep 13 night, was greeted with cheers from hundreds of fans gathered there.

"I have reached this stage because of my coach Satpal. My prime focus is now the Commonwealth Games and I am confident of doing well there," the bronze medalist Olympian told reporters.
