US Open: Sharapova keeps hopes alive, advances

By Abdul Nisar
New York, Sep 3: The 2006 US Open champion, Maria Sharapova, won her second round match and advanced to the third round of US Open 2010.

Sharapova defeated Czech Republic's Iveta Benesova 6-1 6-2 and kept alive her hopes of a second US Open crown. The 14th-seeded Sharapova wrapped up the match in just one hour and 6 minutes. Sharapova opened strongly, breaking the 68th-ranked Benesova in the second game for a 3-0 lead.

The Russian glamour girl will meet 18-year old Beatrice Capra, a wild-card entrant who at 371 in the world is the lowest-ranked player to reach the third round at the US Open since 2002.

The second round match was a far more accomplished performance by Sharapova than in the first round, when she was made to struggle at times against the Australian Jarmila Groth before winning in three sets.
