US Open: Sania cruises to 2nd round, Somdev loses

By Abdul Nisar
New York, Aug 31: Indian hope in US Open, Sania Mirza, won her opening match and moved to the second round but another Indian player, Somdev Devvarman, lost his opening round in the men's singles of US Open.

In the first round match Sania defeated Portugal's Michelle Larcher de Brito (6-3, 6-2) in just one hour and 17 minutes. It was Sania's fourth continuous win as she won three matches previously in the US Open qualifiers.

In the second round Sania will face Russian 20th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. She was forced to go through the qualifiers of Grand Slam for the first time since 2005 due to low ranking.

Somdev Devvarman lost to South Africa's Kevin Anderson (3-6 4-6 3-6) in his first round in the men's singles event, after getting a direct entry into a Grand Slam for the first time. Earlier in this season he failed to qualify for the Australian Open and the Wimbledon and lost in the first round of the French Open.

Sania told that the first round win gives her more confidence to fight in the coming rounds.

"I am just going to enjoy it. I was happy when I won the first round of the qualifiers and I am happy again today. I love playing here on the hardcourts in New York and always seem to do well here," said Sania after the match.
