No forest clearance to Vedanta mining project
New Delhi, Aug 24: In the first ever move by India against an industrial project based on environmental concerns, the Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh on Tuesday, Aug 24 announced that the government has rejected the forest clearance to the Vedanta mining project.
The final decision on the controversial bauxite mining project was taken on a report submitted by a key government panel on forest clearance.
This comes a day after the Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced to the media that the Prime Minister has cleared way for the Vedanta mining project.
On Monday, Aug 23, Patnaik met Dr Manmohan Singh to hold discussions on various projects facing delays in the state, including the multi-crore Posco project and the Vedanta mining project. He had said that he would meet Mr Ramesh on the Vedanta project.
