9 killed in communist rebel attack: Philippines
New People's Army (NPA) gunmen murdered a village official at his home and then attack a police patrol which was sent to investigate the killing said Arnold Revilla, the regional police chief.
The rebels set off a roadside bomb as the patrol approached the village official's home, then fired the policemen said Revilla.
Revilla said policemen were airlifted fearing that more unexploded bombs would set off on roads.
The 5,000-member NPA has been waging a Maoist rebellion across Philippines since 1969 that has left thousands of people dead.
