Riyadh, Aug 10: Saudi Arabia allowed Research In Motion Ltd to continue BlackBerry services while asking the Canadian company to put in place a system that will let the kingdom monitor user data.
The Communications and Information Technology Commission's announcement on Tuesday, Aug 10, that it will allow BlackBerry services to be continued
Saudi Arabia had threatened to ban BlackBerry services on Friday, Aug 6, citing national security concerns. But RIM was given a 48 hour extension, expiring Monday, Aug 9 night, to address the country's concerns.
The regulator said it was continuing to work with the country's three mobile phone service providers and would take the necessary steps based on progress made.
The Communications and Information Technology Commission, Saudi Arabia"s telecommunications regulator, will watch progress in the talks and decide on the status of services depending on if a solution can be reached, sources said.
