Wellington, Aug 7 (ANI): Hundreds of women in New Zealand have taken part in an attempt to set a breastfeeding world record.

Former Silver Fern Julie Seymour, 39, and 27 other women gathered at the Waipuna Early Childhood Centre in Linwood to take part in the attempt to set a record for the most women breastfeeding simultaneously.

And similar gatherings were held at other venues in Christchurch and around New Zealand as part of the annual Big Latch On to promote awareness of the importance of breastfeeding.

Seymour, a mother of four, said the event helped people feel comfortable about breastfeeding in public, and that it was important to encourage mothers to breastfeed, despite its challenges.

"I think it is harder for young mums, but, then again, I think it's hard for everyone; it's really not the easiest thing to do, especially not in the world today," Stuff.co.nz quoted her as saying.

The organiser of the event, Susan Procter, said breastfeeding could be an isolating experience for some mothers.

Organisers will announce next week whether a record was set. (ANI)
