10,000 people suffer due to manganese tainted tap water in S China town

Guangzhou, Aug 4 (ANI): At least 10,000 people suffered a shortage of drinking water in a South China town on Wednesday following the detection of excessive manganese in the tap water.

"The city government of Lufeng in Guangdong Province said the manganese level in the tap water in Da'an town was 1.2 mg per liter since Monday, 12 times the maximum amount allowed in drinking water," reports Xinhua.he

The environment specialists from Lufeng City are conducting further analysis to find out the exact cause of contamination.

According to the safety standards for drinking water, issued jointly by the Ministry of Health and the Standardization Administration in 2007, the maximum manganese level allowed is 0.1 mg in every liter of drinking water.

Earlier on Tuesday, the local government out up notices in the city warning residents not to drink tap water till a further notice is issued.

"We are trying to remedy the situation and will keep you posted," read a Government notice. (ANI)
