Sensex closes 213 points higher

Mumbai, Aug 2: Sensex closed 213 points higher supported by global cues and buying in heavyweights like ICICI Bank.

At 4.25 hrs, BSE Sensex was 18081.21 up 212.92 points and NSE Nifty was 5431.65 up 64.05 points.

The top gainers were PNB up 4.47 percent, ICICI Bank up 3.83 perecent, Bharati Airtel up 3.67 percent and SBI up 3.33 percent.

The top losers were ABB down 1.00 percent, Reliance Power down 0.85 percent, SAIL down 0.42 percent and NTPC down 0.33 percent.

Sensex gains 200 pts on buying in rate sensitives

While Sensex was holding on to the 18k mark, Nifty continued above the 5400 mark with a positive bias. Buying in rate sensitives like banks, realty and metal stocks as well as positive cues from European markets have helped the Indian indices sustain their uptrend.

At 2:00 pm, BSE Sensex was at 18,079.15, up 210.86 points and NSE Nifty was at 5430.05, up 62.45 points.

Up 2 to 4 per cent, Bharti Airtel, PNB, ICICI Bank, ONGC and SBI were the largecap gainers while ABB, Reliance Power, SAIL, BPCL and NTPC lost 0.2 to 0.7 per cent.

Among the heavyweights, Reliance was up 0.53 per cent, refinery major HPCL was up 0.42 per cent, Tech major Infosys was trading up 0.29 per cent, Cigarette major ITC was trading up 1.34 per cent and Hindustan Lever was up 1.14 per cent.

Among the midcaps, Manappuram, GSFC, Man Infra, Hind Nat Glass and Shriram City were up while Rei Agro, Infotech Enterprises, Trent, Gujarat Flourochem and KEC International dipped.

The smallcap gainers were AP Paper Mills, Page Industries, Karuturi Global, Gemini Communications and Future Capital. However, Nagarjuna Agrichem, Voltamp Transformers, Nucleus Software, Orient Abrasive and Globus Spirits slipped.

Sensex above 18k mark with 25 shares in green

After opening the day green on Asian cues, the benchmarks continue to trade in the positive terrain with help from financial, capital goods, auto, metal, FMCG, oil & gas exploration and telecom companies' shares.

With support from 25 out of 30 shares, BSE Sensex has surged above the 18k mark and NSE Nifty is trading above 5,400 mark.

At 12 pm, BSE was at 18,041.30, up 173.01 points, and NSE Nifty was at 5421.45, up 53.85 points.

Among the top gainers were Bharti Airtel up 3.41 per cent, ICICI Bank up 2.91 per cent, PNB up 2.48 per cent; GAIL up 1.54 per cent; Unitech up 1.54 per cent; Maruti Suzuki up 1.33 per cent; BHEL up 1.16 per cent and SBI up 1.13 per cent.

Mkts open positive on supportive Asian cues

Riding on supportive cues from Asian markets, the Indian indices started the week on a positive note. At 9:01 am, BSE Sensex was trading at 18033, up 163 points and NSE Nifty was at 5417, up 49 points.

The CNX Midcap rose 65 points to 8480 on the opening bell.

The early frontline gainers were Bharti Airtel, Tata Motors, IDFC, Sterlite Industries, Hindalco, Sterlite, Tata Steel, Suzlon, Cairn India, DLF and SBI.

On asset quality improvement in Q1FY11, ICICI Bank surged 2.2 per cent.

However, ABB, Infosys and Idea were on the losing side.
