"Paul, the Octopus, We love you, He picks the winner, When he eats his dinner, Paul the Octopus, We love you," goes the chorus of the song written by animal song writer, Parry Gripp.
Paul's song quickly emerged as a internet sensation. The song with a nasal vocal track and a rather simple electronic beat posted on the popular video sharing website, Youtube, got over 484,000 views on Friday, Jul 16.
Paul predicted the winners of the football World Cup ties with 100 per cent accuracy and managed to hit the headlines almost everyday alongside the reports of on-field football action.
However, Paul's popularity is probably not the only thing that could be the reason behind the song's instant success as the songwriter is quiet famous too.
Some of Gripp's earlier compositions such as Hamster Mania got 469,600 views, Weiner Dog Riding a Skateboard got 886,000 views, Spaghetti Cat got 1.54 million views, Boogie Boogie Hedgehog amassed 2.6 million views, Cat Flushing a Toilet got 3.89 million views and Chimpanzee Riding a Segway received a whopping four million views.
