Fierce encounter in JK for the 4th day

Srinagar, Jul 16: Fierce encounter from the ultras continued in Jammu Kashmir for the fourth day as an army major and two jawans got injured in a gun battle with the militants in Poonch district on Friday, Jul 16.

A group of 10 to 12 militants perched on mountain tops in Mankote forest belt and fired on the troops of 37 Rashtriya Rifles who were conducting an operation. The Rashtriya Rifles defended which resulted in an encounter, at around 04:30 hrs, informed Biplav Nath, Lt Col.

A Major and two jawans were injured in the encounter. Injured Armymen, Major GS Shekhawat, Naik Narendra Kumar and Sepoy Bhanu Pratap have been airlifted to the military hospital in Udhampur.

The anti-terrorist operation was launched by 37 Rashtriya Rifle (RR) troops after the infiltration of a group of militants in Mankote forest belt on Jul 13. A Major, Amit Phunge was killed in the encounter and a Colonel was injured in a previous encounter with suspected Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants on Jul 13. Two LeT militants were killed in another encounter on Thursday, Jul 15 in Beri-Rakh forest area.

An army official said that the operation to track down the rest of militants in the dense forest belt close to the Line of Control in Mankote-Mendhar belt is going on.
