Islamabad, Jul 14: Three motorcycle-borne unidentified gunmen assassinated Baloch nationalist leader Habib Jalib Baloch in Quetta city of south-western Pakistan.
Deputy Inspector General of Police Hamid Shakil informed the media that the former parliamentarian was gunned down outside his home on Sariab Road on Wednesday, Jul 14 morning.
While the gunmen fled the scene, the senior Baloch leader was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared dead.
Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province, has been rattled by a series of targeted killings since two years. Police suspect that the assassination was part of the recent strikes.
No group has claimed responsibility for the assassination yet.
The death of the Baloch leader has prompted Balochistan National Party (BNP) activists to take to the streets in protest. Besides Quetta, protests have been reported from Turbat, Mastung, Qalat, Hub, Bela and Khuzdar.
Balochistan University has been shut for two days as a precautionary measure and the police and paramilitary forces have been put on alert.
