London, Jul 11 (ANI): England's ace striker Wayne Rooney got emotional during a call to his Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson and told him that he was missing his son Kai.
The Manchester United striker struggled to find the form that turned him into one of the world's most feared forwards.
Ferguson spoke with Rooney during the tournament, and he admitted that he struggled to be away from his newborn son, News of the World reports.
Kai is just over six months old, and Rooney admitted it was difficult to be away from his son for such a long period.
England's team management were aware of Rooney's problems, but were convinced he could cope during the tournament.
Ferguson claimed the pressure on Rooney to be the star turn at the tournament had got to him, but it has also emerged he was missing his son.
Rooney is currently away on a family holiday and Ferguson is determined to resist the temptation to play him at the start of the season.
He wants the striker to have a decent rest ahead of the new campaign and is expected to miss United's Premier League opener against Newcastle, the paper reports. (ANI)
