New Delhi, Jul 10: “India is the Food Factory of the World," said Subodh Kant Sahai, Union Minister of Food Processing Industries, at the Valedictory Session of the 5th Food Safety and Quality Summit in New Delhi on Friday, Jul 9.
Speaking at the summit he said, "we have tremendous potential in food sector. More than 70 percent of Indians are connected with agriculture as compared to the western countries. In this way India is leading in food production."
Recollecting his efforts in merging sixteen food laws administered by nine ministries into one Food Act, 2006 to be administered by Food Standards, he cautioned the challenge of meeting multiple food safety legislations in the west as a deterrent to India becoming the Food factory of the world.
Speaking about the industrial sector, he said "the growth of industry is possible only by good quality and good international standards. At the same time small business firms should also be encouraged."
