New York, July 4 (ANI): Anna Chapman, the red-haired beauty accused of being a Russian spy, is embarrassed by steamy photos of her splashed across newspapers, and fears deportation, her lawyer has said.
The American dailies have dubbed Chapman, 28, a "bombshell" and a "femme fatale" with many featuring pictures of her from her Facebook page posing in Times Square, sporting hip-hugging dresses and mingling with businessmen.
"She was embarrassed by some of the photos that were obviously taken from her Facebook pages. The truth is she's probably no different than your typical single 28-year-old woman in New York City. She runs a successful business, goes out at night. She dates men, enjoys a social life," The New York Daily News quoted her attorney Robert Baum, as saying.
Chapman has been accused of conspiring to act as an unregistered agent of a foreign government and could be sentenced to a five-year prison term if the charges are proved.
She was the first of 10 spy suspects - arrested last weekend - whose bail request was turned down.
According to Baum, Chapman's father, a Russian diplomat, asked her to go to police with a fake passport an undercover FBI agent had given to her, leading to her arrest. The lawyer said he could use that information to appeal her bail.
Baum, who spent several hours with Chapman this week, described her as "very frightened.
He said Chapman is being kept in an isolated cell in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. She's allowed an hour of exercise a day, the only time she can spend with another inmate.
She has no access to TV, newspapers or phones.
Baum said: "She's taking the charges very seriously. The only time I saw less than a serious outlook was when she read some of the things being said about her."
Baum said he told Chapman she was being labelled a "party girl" in the press.
"I wouldn't say she laughed. She smiled and rolled her eyes," Baum added. (ANI)
