Congo tanker explosion: Toll increases 230

Kinshasa, Jun 4: The death toll in the Congo tanker explosion has reached 230. The fuel tanker was overturned and exploded in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, after it blazed the homes and citizens who were watching World Cup soccer.

The bodies were littered across the streets and many of the bodies were burned beyond recognition. Red Cross operators burried the charred bodies of some among the people killed in the dreadful incident. They carried the bodies from the spot in body bags to bury them in two mass graves a few miles away.

United Nations' helicopter joined the rescue operation and airlifted hundreds of injured people to hospital. Congo's Army had also sent soldiers to deal with victims of the incident. Congo Army also had lost a number of men in the blast.

The explosion which also injured more than 190 people happened on Friday, Jul 2, evening.

The reason for the blast is not yet convinced. The local people said that the truck, which was part of a convoy stopped when the road appeared to crumble which overturned the tanker spilling fuel, which caused the explosion.
