40 feared to have drowned in Bihar boat mishap
Bihar, Jul 2: A boat mishap killed a man and at least 40 people were feared drowned in wavering Gandak river in Bihar's West Champaran district On Friday, Jul 2.
Police said that the overcrowded boat turned turtle while it was going from Ranha village to Bhagwanpur.
The accident occurred near Ghoria Ghat under Srinagar police station of the Bettiah district in Bihar.
The victims were mainly wage earners and were crossing the river on way to riverside areas.
Local drivers helped the senior district officials in the rescue operation.
Nishant Tiwary, the superintendent of police said about one hundred persons were on boat. Sixty persons swam to safety.
The State government asked for an investigation of the incident and declared one lakh rupees compensation to each families of the victims.
