Monsoon aggravates H1N1; deaths, infections rise

New Delhi, Jun 28: Swine flu has yet against emerged as a serious threat with the number of deaths due to the H1N1 influenza and infections has risen since the on of monsoon.

In one week, starting from Jun 21 till Jun 28, 17 fatalities reported due to H1N1 infection across the country. And out of 1,43,285 people tested for the virus, 33,083, accounting for 23 per cent, have tested positive.

Kerala and Maharashtra have emerged as the worst-affected states. Health Ministry on Monday, Jun 28 informed that seven deaths were reported from Kerala and Maharashtra while Andhra Pradesh reported two and Uttar Pradesh one.

Since rains lashed Kerala, the state death toll has surged 32. 16 deaths were reported from the state between May 15 and Jun 15. From Jun 8 to Jun 14, Kerala reported 10 of the 14 deaths reported across India.

The distressing numbers from Kerala prompted Central government to send a three-member team to the state to assess the situation, while Kerala government requested the Union Health Ministry to distribute H1N1 vaccine to ensure its availability to public.
