Soon, cancer-preventing medicines based on natural substances

Washington, June 24 (ANI): Scientists are trying to come up with medicines based on substances in naturally-occurring foods and turn their potential into reality - of preventing cancer.

A new research has described how scientists, sifting through natural products from fruits and vegetables, have narrowed down the list to certain products such as resveratrol, a substance found in red wine.

Other possible choices include abyssinone, a substance found in a plant from traditional Chinese medicine.

Scientists are also studying potential cancer-preventing substances in deep-ocean microbes.

The article appears in the current issue of Chemical and Engineering News (C and EN).

C and EN Associate Editor Carmen Drahl cites continued optimism that the search will pay off, even though some natural products have failed to prevent cancer in human clinical trials. (ANI)
