Johannesburg: David Villa scored two goals to help Spain claim their first victory against Honduras in their Group H encounter at Johannesburg.
Villa had a good chance to make it a hatrick from a penalty spot but he missed the penalty to help Spain eventually win by 2-0 against Honduras. La furia roja looked like they would be winning the match with a big margin as they kept on pressing for goals but there were many missed opportunities and they eventually had to settle for 2-0 margin.
La Furia Roja as expected started play in a very positive manner, making those quick moves and going for goals.
Torres got a good ball from Villa around the 5th minute but he couldn't connect his shot properly.
In the seventh minute Villa hit a long range shot but his shot was denied by the cross bar. The goal keeper was completely beaten.
In the 11th minute, Xavi put a magnificent ball in the Honduras penalty box but Sergio Ramos ballooned his header off the mark.
In the 17th minute Villa made a magical run all the way to beat three Honduras defender and score Spain's first goal of the World Cup. Villa incidentally scored his 40th goal playing for Spain.
In the opening 20 minutes Spain had produced 5 shots out of which 3 were on target and Honduras had just 1 shot on goal.
Navas put a good ball in the 24th minute for Xavi who was in the Honduras penalty box, but his cross was just over the head of Xavi.
Torres meanwhile was looking completely out of touch and his rhythm seemed to be missing.
In the 33rd minute Torres got a free header after Ramos put a
good ball but his header was too weak and bounced once towards the
keeper for a easy catch.
Just after few seconds Torres got another great chance but again he hit the ball way over the crossbar.
Spain was making a lot of movement from the right side, with Navas, combining with Ramos and running with the ball every now and then and delivering some good ball.
At the end of the first half, La furia roja was leading the game with 1 goal to nil.
Spain were charged up and looking for their second goal as the referee resumed second half play.
Villa scored his second goal of the night in the 51st minute. He
hit a shot from just outside the penalty box which took a small
deflection from the Honduras defense.
In the very next minute Ramos made a good run and hit a thunderous drive, but his shot was just wide of the goal.
Pique meanwhile was bleeding in the 54th minute after he was unintentionally hit by Honduras player while sliding for the ball. He was taken out for treatment.
Honduras players were struggling big time as they were not able to hold on with much possession. They had no shot on target through out the match.
In the 61st minute Spain got a penalty as Navas was taken down by Emilio Izaguirre. David Villa looking for his hatrick hit the penalty but failed to find the back of the net. The goalkeeper was completely deceived by Villa's spot kick but his shot was inches wide of the side post.
In the 66th minute Cesc Fabregas was brought in for Xavi Hernandez.
Fabregas was the man in focus right after his entrance as he got a golden opportunity to make it 3 goals for Spain but his shot was cleared off the line.
The Spanish team were keeping the Honduras goalkeeper busy with shot after shots.
In the 70th minute Torres who had a disappointing night was taken off and replaced by Juan Manuel Mata.
La furia roja were in full command and were passing the ball very comfortably as Honduras could barely make any real opportunities and test their opposition keeper Casillas.
In the 87th minute Villa again got a good opportunity to score his hatrick but defender Mendoza slid in to make a great clearance for Honduras.
Towards the end of the game Honduras managed to pull back some possession but were never able to make a Casillas stretch.
La furia roja managed to get their first victory and are up and running to top the group and qualify for the last 16.
