While Mallya was backed by Deve Gowda's JD(S), Ram Jethmalani's chances grew stronger when CPM decided to boycot the elections. The Rajsthan unit of BJP, which locked up its MLAs in a hotel for days before the polls to prevent cross voting, managed to ensure that Jethmalani wins.
From Rajasthan, the ruling Congress ensured that the Union Commerce Minister Anand Sharma get another term. However, Congress-backed industrialist Santosh Bargodia lost.
