Rajapaksa assures India on resettlement of Tamils

New Delhi, Jun 10: Sri Lankan President, Mahinda Rajapaksa, who held talks with Indian delegation here on Wednesday, Jun 10, vowed to put the rehabilitation of war displaced Tamils on a fast track.

Citing elections and the de-mining operations as the resons for the delay in the process of rehabilitation, the newly elected president assured a delegation of Members of Parliament that the resettlement of Tamils will be completed within a span of three months.

Rajapaksa recieved a memorandum requesting the Sri Lanka Government to take immediate steps for the rehabilitation of war displaced 80,000 Tamils from a delegation of DMK and Congress MPs of Tamil Nadu.

As many as 300,000 Tamils were displaced in the war against the rebel group, Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). While a portion of the war displaced have been rehabilitated, aorund 80,000 Tamils still live in relief camps. Rajapaksa, however, said only 54,000 Tamils still await to be rehabilitated.
